Dr Muhammad Rashid Director General Ayyub Agriculture Research Institute, Faisalabad, has said that the level of competence in biometrical principles and techniques can be improved through the improvement of quality research at the national scenario.
He was delivering his presidential address at the national seminar on "Strengthening of Design and Analysis Capabilities in the National Agricultural Research System(NARS)" jointly organised by Dept of Math and Statistics UAF, ALP Directorate PARC Islamabad and Pakistan Statistical Association Faisalabad Chapter at Old Senate Hall on Saturday.
Dr Rashid said that in Pakistan, biometrical and statistical support for research at the agricultural research centre is, very nominal. The statistical units at these centres are viewed primarily as data processing units and not as a source for biometrical assistance which must provide consultancy services on planning, designing and analysis and interpretation of agricultural research problems.
Earlier Dean Faculty of Sciences, Professor Muhammad Ashraf said that the statisticians in agricultural research centres unfortunately are not well-trained to provide much more than routine assistance in the selection of experimental designs and analysis of experimental data.
Dean, Business Management NCBA Lahore Professor Dr Ahmad Zogo Mamen in his key note address said that use of sophisticated packages like Statistical requires better understanding of design principles and their output requires better in sight of the subject matter to extract maximum use of the statistical package.
He further said that the major handicap of the stereo type packages is that they are unable to handle complex situation where we have unbalance data or sophisticated designs like incomplete block designs of various kinds.
Professor Muhammad Inayat Khan Chairman, Dept of Math and Stat UAF while highlighting the importance of national seminar said that the main purpose of this event is to share the results of the project on strengthening of design and analysis capabilities in the National Agricultural Research System(NARS) with the major objectives like to conduct experiments on improved experimental designs at different research stations to test the efficiency of the design.
He maintained that due to this project we have made substantial contributions in achieving all the objectives in order to disseminate and introduce novel statistical methods and advance but statistically efficient experimental designs for agricultural experimentation. A large number of faculty members, scientists from all over the country and students attended the inaugural session.
