Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday condemned last week's assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, branding it as an act of Islamic extremism. "We heard with great sorrow and bow our heads in the memory of the freedom fighter Benazir Bhutto," Olmert said at the weekly cabinet meeting.
Benazir "ended up a victim of an act of terror by Islamic extremism and fundamentalism of the type we know so well in our region," the Israeli premier said. He said Israel "must denounce and express its shock and assist states fighting against extremism". Benazir, a two-time former prime minister of Pakistan, was assassinated during a political rally in the northern city of Rawalpindi on Thursday.
