US Plains hard red winter wheat basis values were mostly steady on Monday, with many merchants taking 5-10 cents a bushel protection against falling futures prices. The market remained mostly quiet in a holiday slowdown. A firmer tone continued for higher-protein wheat with low-protein supplies showing a weaker tone.
Farmers were generally cheered after several inches of snow blanketed much of the Plains last week. More snow is expected in some areas later this week, bringing moisture and protective cover to the new crop.
In the futures market, prices fell hard Friday and more losses were likely Monday, traders said. Kansas City Board of Trade HRW wheat futures ended down the 30-cent limit for March and May wheat on Friday. July ended down 10-1/2 cents at $8.14. The market closes at noon Tuesday and will be closed Tuesday for the New Year's Day holiday.
