The Supreme Court of Pakistan disposed of 586 cases during the month of December 2007 whereas 644 new cases were instituted. The backlog of cases in Supreme Court on 1st January 2008 is 15,189. As 644 new cases were instituted during the month of December 2007, the total of pending cases as on 31st December 2007 comes to 15,775.
Out of these, 586 cases were disposed off in the month of December and the backlog on 1st January 2008 remained 15189. Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar constituted benches at the Principal Seat, Islamabad and Branch Registries Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar to expedite the case hearings and clear the backlog.
A press release of the court said that the Chief Justice and Judges of Supreme Court remained committed to accelerated/ expeditious disposal off the cases and diminished the backlog. Despite the fact that there were winter vacations for apex court during the month of December 2007 the Judges continued to hear the cases in various benches with the aim to minimise the backlog and provide relief to the litigants.
In Supreme Court Main Registry, Islamabad 424 cases were instituted and 343 cases were disposed off during the month. In Supreme Court Branch Registry, Lahore 124 cases were instituted and 67 cases were disposed off. In Branch Registry, Karachi 49 cases were instituted and 128 cases were disposed off.
In Branch Registry, Peshawar 36 cases were instituted and 43 cases were disposed off and in Branch Registry Quetta 11 cases were instituted and 5 cases were disposed off.
