A team of British anti-terror police will head for Pakistan by the end of the week to help investigate the killing of Benazir Bhutto, Scotland Yard and Foreign Minister David Miliband said on Wednesday.
"At the request of President Musharraf, the Prime Minister has agreed to send a UK Police team of technical experts to assist the government of Pakistan in the investigation of the death of Benazir Bhutto," he said in a statement. "The team is due to leave the UK by the end of the week," he said.
The Metropolitan Police (MPS) said that "a small team of officers from the MPS Counter Terrorism Command will be travelling to Pakistan to provide support and assistance in the investigation into the death of Benazir Bhutto. "The officers will travel to Pakistan as soon as possible. The Pakistan authorities continue to lead the investigation into Benazir Bhutto's death," added a Scotland Yard statement.
In the statement, issued shortly after Pakistan rescheduled elections for February 18, he voiced hope that authorities would use the extra time to ensure the polls are "transparent and fair." The elections had been due on January 8, but now it postponed because of the disruption caused by Bhutto's death last week.
