Political parties sans the former ruling coalition strongly opposed the Election Commission's polls postponement decision, demanding a national government and neutral Election Commission for holding free and fair elections.
They also alleged that the decision has been taken at the behest of the government to facilitate the Q-League in occupying the corridors of power by rigging the polls.
However, these political parties are yet to take a joint decision whether to contest or boycott the elections are in contact with to evolve future line of action.
Pakistan Muslim League (N) said that since the Election Commission and the caretaker government have failed to exercise their due roles, they should resign and a new national government as well as a neutral Election Commission be set up to hold a free, fair and transparent elections.
Reacting to the decision, PML-N chairman Raja Zafarul Haq said that the government has failed in discharging its duties and should hand over the affairs to a national government.
He further said that there was no reason to postpone the elections except to bring Q-League in the corridors of power by rigging the elections. He said that PML-N is in contact with all other political parties to evolve a joint strategy.
Ahsan Iqbal, PML-N Secretary Information also strongly reacted to the decision terming it a conspiracy to rig the elections as the Q-League has lost its credibility and vote bank particularly after the assassination of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
He also rejected the election commission's claim that the decision was taken by consulting all the political parties. To a question, he said that boycott by the PML-N alone would not serve the purpose and it would motivate PPP and other like-minded parties to boycott the so-called elections.
Farzana Raja, PPP Secretary Information, Punjab said that there is no law and order issue in the country which could cause postponement of the elections rather it is a strategy of the regime to level ground for the Q-League by using delaying tactics.
Election Commission decided to delay the polls at the behest of the government only to facilitate the Q-League, he alleged. "If elections data is burnt at some provincial election offices it should supplied from the central office. This is a just an excuse to facilitate the Q-League," she alleged.
Liaquat Baloch, Amir, Jamaat-i-Islami Punjab said that government has already planned to rig the elections adding that it is better for the rulers to quit and put in place a neutral government and an independent election commission for holding free and fair elections after admitting its failure.
