A number of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) retail outlets, selling the product at Rs 65 per kilogram in Lahore, has increased from 55 to 67, said the LPG Association of Pakistan (LPGAP), a grouping of all LPG marketing companies.
"The 67 retail points throughout Lahore have been advertised by distributors of various companies that the LPG is readily available at these sales points at Rs 65 per kilogramme," association spokesman Fasih Ahmed said on Friday. "Except for Lahore, the LPG retail price ranges between Rs 63-70 per kilogram throughout Pakistan, including in Azad Jammu and Kashmir," said Ahmed.
"The LPG prices in Lahore have been artificially increased beyond all rational levels by certain vested interests," he said. Ahmed described two meetings held with Lahore's District Co-ordination Officer on Thursday as productive.
"The DCO has instructed all the LPG marketing companies and the LPG distributors to comply with the orders of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) and ensure that the retail prices should not exceed Rs 65 per kilogram in Lahore, Ahmed said.
"We share the DCO's concerns and are working with the officials to rationalise the LPG retail prices in Lahore," he said. He said the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) had conveyed its concerns to the relevant quarters and set the deadline for Monday for the concerned parties to bring the retail rates down to Rs 65 per kilogram.
"If they do wrong, the government will have no choice but to take action against the black-marketers," he said. The 67 LPG retail points in Lahore have prominently placed banners, telling the consumers about the product's prices.
