National Accountability Bureau (NAB) under section 33-C of National Accountability Ordinance 1999 is mandated to undertake preventive measures to ensure that government laws, rules and regulations are followed, to eliminate corruption and corrupt practices.
Accordingly, NAB will collaborate with Punjab local government to examine the prevailing accountability framework of the latter, with special emphasis on tehsil municipal administration, according to a press release issued here Monday.
In this regard, a meeting chaired by DG NAB Punjab, Major General Nisar Mehmood was held with Secretary Local Government and Community Development, Punjab, Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar and senior officers of both departments. Tarar gave a detailed briefing on the accountability framework, identified various corruption-prone areas and other issues related to accountability in local government including Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA).
The meeting decided to form a Steering Committee comprising of senior officers of NAB Punjab and Punjab Local Government to prepare draft recommendations for strengthening the accountability framework. It also decided to enhance cooperation between the two on cases of accountability/ corruption in the different tiers of the local government.
