The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (Punjab Zone) has warned that the sugar industry could suffer if sugar is sold cheap in the market. An Association spokesman said on Wednesday that the current prices were unable to cater and recover those of sugarcane, although the Punjab sugar industry was paying Rs 60 per 40-kg for sugarcane.
He said the heavy frost attack had drastically reduced the sugar contents in the sugarcane and the cheap sugar added more woes to the industry. "The federal government should honour its commitment to ensuring Rs 29.50 per kg ex-mill sugar prices to avoid a collapse of the sugar industry," he said.
