Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) said on Wednesday that Pakistan enjoys strong, historic and friendly relations with China. "Exchange of more delegations in trade, culture and sports will further strengthen ties between the two countries," he said.
While talking to an eight-member delegation of Chinese media, headed by Director of International Deptt Folk and Culture, Ms Ping Wang who called on him at the Governor House. He said that Pakistan and China commenced relations in 1960, first in the defence sector, and with the passage of time the ties were extended to trade, culture and industry.
The governor said the establishment of Engineering University in Pakistan by China will help enhance bilateral relations in the education sector, and stressed the need for exchange of more student delegations between the two countries.
He said that Punjab is the largest province of the country and contributes a major share to the national agriculture, industry and trade. Chinese are investing in roads, cement, energy and pharmaceutical sectors while their experts and staff are providing services in many other fields, he added.
Maqbool assured the media delegates that the government is taking extra security measures for the protection of the Chinese personnel engaged in various projects in Pakistan. "Some elements do not want strong relations between Pakistan and China," he observed, adding that terrorist activities aim to destabilise our country.
He said that the interference of foreign forces in Afghanistan was a major reason behind the law and order situation in Pakistan. However, he observed, the government is committed to maintain peace in the country, and every effort will be made in this regard.
Ms Ping Wang appreciated the significant role played by Pakistan in the war against terror. On the occasion, the governor chatted informally with the Chinese media team, and answered several questions posed by its members.
