Presidential spokesman Major General Rashid Qureshi (Retd) on Thursday urged media to pinpoint rumour-mongers persistently issuing baseless and unfounded news stories without even confirming these from the presidency.
He vehemently denied news item reported (by unknown person) that no agreement had been reached between the presidency and political parties on the issue of the reinstatement of deposed judges of the superior judiciary.
Before broadcasting/issuing such news items, media should identify the source and tell people about these people, who were trying to fuel confrontation, he said talking to a private television channel.
He some vested elements were trying to fuel confrontation, instilling confusion among peoples' mind by issuing such baseless and unfounded news items that something was cooking up on judges issue.
"The news item in question has reported that several proposals are being put forth by the presidency regarding judges reinstatement, including the suggestion to reinstate rest of the judges sans deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
"PCO should not be questioned. Cases settled after November 3 should not be reopened," he said. According to the said news item, "it was also being proposed that if political parties avoid reinstating deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, then the president will not object abrogation of 58/2B."
Terming the news item baseless, he said he was sitting in President's House he did not hear about such suggestions. He said AFP news agency was approached for such showing irresponsibility. But AFP had denied and vowed to sue the person, who issued baseless news without confirmation.
Qureshi categorically stated that no talks were being held with political parties in connection with judges reinstatement. He reiterated that reinstatement of deposed judges was impossible. The only way out was to amend the Constitution. However, legal and constitutional experts could better opine about the issue. "It can be better confirmed by Advocate General of Pakistan. Judges of superior judiciary. Sharifuddin Peerzada can tell the way out of judges reinstatement," Qureshi said.
