A 10-day orientation programme for post-graduate students of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) concluded on Saturday with a certificate distribution ceremony at the City Campus. The American Consulate in Lahore and Principal Officer, Bryan D Hunt, was the chief guest, who distributed the certificates to the students.
Stressing the importance of agriculture and livestock he said that agriculture and livestock were the main sources of livelihood and had a major contribution to the global economy too, adding that their importance increasing with the rising prices of wheat and corn and destroying the market of poultry commodities due to spread of bird flu and other animal diseases. In this connection, he said, the university had a tremendous contribution to educate students and do research in the livestock sector.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz said the university arranged training of its post-graduate students in communication and information technology skills and statistical software, laboratory practices and research skills in the very beginning of MPhil and PhD courses.
He urged the students to spend more time in laboratories and library and also advised them to keep themselves updated with the latest developments in their respective areas of studies.
In his speech, Research Director Professor Dr Makhdoom Abdul Jabbar said this orientation programme would continue in the future. The American official and the vice chancellor then congratulated the students qualifying for the post-graduate student orientation programme. Students Zaib Mahel got the first position, Javed Iqbal came second and Nazish Munawar third. The Institute of Continuing Education and Extension and the university's Directorate of Advanced Studies organised the programme.
