Former Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry on Tuesday urged the members of European Parliament (EP) to fulfil their responsibilities under Emma Nicholson report and take steps for resolution of Kashmir issue.
"With the interest of European Union in international issues, Kashmiris are pinning hopes that the EU will play its due role for resolution of the longstanding issue," he said, while speaking at a reception hosted by Member of European Parliament Sajjad Karim in Brussels. Members of European Parliament, European Thinktank and media persons attended the reception.
Sultan Mehmood, also President of Azad Kashmir Peoples Muslim League, said the Kashmiris are depending on international community for the last eight years for the resolution of Kashmir issue. But, Indian leadership has been refusing to grant right of self-determination to the Kashmiri people and also committing grave human rights violations in occupied Kashmir, he added.
He urged the European Union and the institutions that believe in social justice to come forward and fulfil their responsibilities. Sultan Mehmood informed that he, as a representative of more than 15 million Kashmiris, had sought support of the members of European Parliament for Kashmir issue.
"All the countries associated with the EU are bound to get resolve the Kashmir issue after passage of Emma Nicholson report from the European Parliament," he added. On the occasion, Member European Parliament, Sajjad Karim pointed out that a number of changes were brought in the original report presented by Emma Nicholson.
"Although the report does not depict our sentiments completely, even then it will continue to remind the European Union to fulfil its duty regarding Kashmir issue," he added. Appreciating the efforts of Sultan Mehmood for the Kashmir cause, he said, "We all are with him and will continue to raise voice in the European Parliament for the resolution of the issue," he added.
Later, talking to other members of the European Parliament, Sultan Mehmood said that there is possibility of the resumption of Pak-India dialogue for resolution of all outstanding issues including Kashmir. The European Union should make efforts by including Kashmiri representatives in the dialogue process, he added.
