Young doctors associated with private and public sector hospitals have unanimously resolved for an across the board raise in the basic pay of house doctors.
Participating in a group discussion organised by Pakistan Medical Association -Karachi, at PMA House to discuss problems faced by Young Doctors of Sindh they said the basic pay for house doctors should not be less than Rs 12000 per month. These doctors associated with different private and public sector hospitals also referred to the exploitative tactics allegedly adopted by the hospitals' administration and owners.
Calling for concrete measures to prevent exploitation of young doctors they referred to rampant practice of minimal salaries and compulsion to work in unhealthy environment. General Secretary PMA Karachi, Dr Samrina Hashmi, who conducted the proceedings also presented possible solutions to the problems faced by young medical graduates.
Other senior doctors who participated in the discussion included Secretary General of PMA Dr Habib-ur-Rehman Soomro, Vice President of PMA -Karachi Dr Humayun Bashir, Dr Umer Farooq and Joint Secretary of PMA Karachi Dr Mehmood Khan.
The participants were unanimous in their demand for a career structure for doctors in general along with those pertaining to teaching cadre in public and private sector. Complete transparency in all matters of health care, right from recruitment to procurement was also demanded on the occasion. The doctors highlighted the urgency to strengthen Basic Health Units, Rural Health Centres, Taluka Hospitals through recruitment of midwives, nurses, paramedics, doctors and specialists on emergent basis.
They stressed that incentives must be given to doctors for serving in remote areas and in interior, enabling them to stay there and realise their professional responsibilities without any unnecessary disturbance. Dr Samrina Hashmi summing up the discussion also cited frequent calls made by medical professionals of the country for an independent, autonomous, powerful and representative PMDC.
