Industrial estates in Karachi have started planning to have their own security system to protect their units from day to day robberies, cash snatching, dacoities in the industrial units and looting of goods during transpiration.
Port Qasim Association of Trade and Industry (PQATI) has taken initiative and launched "Neighbourhood watch scheme." Under this scheme, PQATI appointed armed security guards, equipped with wireless radios system for communication with guards patrolling western industrial area of Port Qasim Authority.
After the PQATI, Korangi Industrial Trade Estate (Kite) has prepared a plan with the name of "Rescue 786," and allocated Rs 25 million for implementing this security plan. Talking to Business Recorder, chief of Kite Development and Management Company Abdul Hasib Khan said that the Provincial Home Department had granted no-objection certificate (NOC) to the project Rescue 786.
After the incident of December 27, 2007, the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati) and other town associations, have discussed the issue of security lapses in industrial areas of the city with President, caretaker Prime Minister, Sindh Governor and City District Government Karachi (CDGK). During the discussion, it was suggested that the industrial estates should have their own security system.
The President agreed with the suggestion and asked the industrial associations to prepare comprehensive security plans. After the decision, Kite Limited prepared a security plan under the name of "Rescue 786" for Korangi industrial area and approached the Sindh Home Department and Sindh Industrial Development Board ((SIDB) for its approval.
Beside the Home Department, the SIDB also allowed establishment of "Rescue 786." The Chairman, Kati Law and Order Committee has also been given additional responsibility to run the "Rescue 786" as its chairman.
He said that Kite Limited would spend around Rs 25 million on this project from its own funds. Industrialists of the area will contribute to meet running expenses of the "Rescue 786" project. It is estimated that running expenses would be around one million rupees per month.
He said that under the proposed security system, vigilance cameras would be installed at all entry, exit points and important places. Besides, checkpoints at strategic points, including all exit and entrance, would be established. The "Rescue 786" patrolling guards would provided 40 motorcycles, eight mobiles, having the facility of wireless system.
The government would provide 300 police constables for the "Rescue 786," besides employing some private security guards. Each constable, posted in the "Rescue 786" will get additional allowance of Rs 1,000 per month.
