Punjab Food Department has set a target for wheat buying at 150,000 metric tons as opposed to the 175,000 metric tons set last year for the corresponding period. According to Assistant Food Controller RYK Chaudhry Tanveer Nusrat Warraich, last year the food authorities were able to buy 135,072 metric tons of wheat, some 40,000 mt less than the fixed target.
"We hope this year we are able to meet the target for buying. All our arrangements are complete", official expressed hope while talking to newsmen here on Saturday. Wheat buying in Punjab is to begin from April 15.
The official gave the breakup of wheat buying target in the district as follows: 39,000 metric tons in Tehsil Sadiqabad; 79,000 mt in Tehsil Liaqutpur; 32,000 mt in Tehsil Rahim Yar Khan, whereas in Tehsil Khanpur (district RYK) Passco is to buy the wheat for the Punjab Food Department.
Responding to a query, the official said there was no shortage of gunny bags as polypropylene bags were amply available with the authorities. Food department would buy wheat from farmers at the announced rate of Rs 625 per 40 kilogram. Wheat buying centres have already been set up in the district.
