President Pervez Musharraf has summoned the Senate to meet on April 25 for the first session since the swearing-in of new government last month. According to a statement by the secretariat, the president called the meeting by using powers under clause (1) of article (54) of the Constitution of Pakistan.
Members from ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and other parties in the coalition government will switch seats with legislators who are now in the opposition.
Mian Raza Rabbani of PPP will assume the charge of Leader of the House after leading the opposition for five years. Former State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kamil Ali Agha is likely to take over as Leader of the Opposition.
The house may pass a resolution recommending the government to approach United Nations (UN) for a probe into the assassination of former premier and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
The National Assembly has already adopted the same resolution in its sitting on Monday. Several burning issues including recent incidents of sabotage in Karachi, Lahore and Multan may also be discussed. Debates on power cuts and price hike are also strong likelihoods.
