Closing stock market indices
Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European stocks surged 2.4 percent to their highest close in 10 days, driven by banks that jumped after Citigroup's update underscored hopes that the end of the global credit crisis was in sight.
The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares ended 2.4 percent higher at 1,325.90 points, its highest close since April 7 and its biggest one-day gain since April 1. The index has risen 5 percent in April, putting it on track for its best month since October 2003.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6,843.08 points, up 161.27 or 2.41 percent, a gain of 239.51 points over the week.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 4,961.69 points, up 99.55 or 2.05 percent, adding 163.76 points since April 11.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 7,418.02 points, up 244.39 or 3.41 percent, up 159.06 points from last Friday.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 25,710 points, up 483 or 1.91 percent, up 522 points from last week.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian shares fell 1.6 percent, ending three days of gains, as financials such as National Australia Bank slipped on caution ahead of earnings from US bank Citigroup, while weaker metals prices hit resource firms. The S&P/ASX 200 index fell 89.3 points to 5,429.7, after rising a total of 3.3 percent in the previous three sessions, losing 9.6 points since last weekend.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African shares were lower, as resource stocks dropped on the back of weaker commodity prices, but the rand reclaimed some ground against the dollar after recent heavy losses. The All-share index closed at 31,594.07 points, down 105.05 or 0.33 percent, up 472.52 points from seven days ago.
The All Gold index closed at 2,542.21 points, down 18.5 or 0.72 percent, up 18.43 points from last weekend, while the Industrial index closed at 20,211.58 points, up 116.92 or 0.58 percent, The index added 461.27 points on the week.
MUMBAI STOCKS EXCHANGE: Indian stock, bond and currency markets are closed on Friday for a local holiday. Trading resumes on Monday.
