Partly Facetious: diplomats' objections to UN probe request

"Did you hear the latest about the request for a UN probe into BB's assassination?"
Published April 24, 2008

"Did you hear the latest about the request for a UN probe into BB's assassination?"
"Well, all I know is that the Law Ministry is busy drafting a request."
"That's true - I wonder who in the Law Ministry is drafting it?"
"Well, it couldn't be Malik Qayyum, could it?"
"Ah, but there you seem to be presupposing that Malik Sahib would have scruples about some things."
"Be careful - he seems to have survived the first purge after all."
"That's true, so do you think Sharifuddin Pirzada is drafting the request?"
"You are being facetious today, aren't you? But the news I was referring to in this connection is a letter written by two career diplomats, namely, the Foreign Secretary and our UN representative."
"No, I haven't heard."
"Apparently, these two have counselled Zardari and all the Jiyalas not to make such a request as in their words, 'establishment of a UN commission or tribunal to investigate the tragic assassination of Benazir Bhutto will require a formal request by the Pakistan government to the UN and a Security Council resolution under a Pakistan specific agenda. Once such Pakistan specific item is on the agenda, it will provide the UN Security Council a permanent handle to consider matters relating to the internal situation of Pakistan.'"
"Ah, I see. It was OK for Lebanon to do so because they wanted the UN to deal with Syria, while the new Pakistani leadership can certainly start the investigation on their own."
"And unless Zardari agrees to an autopsy..."
"Which he should now that he is appointing his own loyalists in key positions with the support of his coalition partners..."
"Right so the best way is the local way."
"As always."
