There are some people like prism, when someone looks through it, he comes across a spectrum having all the colours of rainbow. This image captured my vision, when I read the book about Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali.
"Maulana Barkatullah Bhopali, harbinger of revaluation" is the title of the book compiled by professor Shafqat Rizvi and published by Pakistan Study Center, University of Karachi.
Professor Rizvi is a versatile research scholar having interest in various fields of creative writing and pursuit of knowledge. He has several books to his credit concerning history, politics, culture, literature and linguistics.
The book now under discussion contains 13 chapter having many sections and sub-sections. It covers the entire life and activities of Maulana Barkatullah. Through Maulana's life story one gets acquainted with the fabric political, social and cultural life not only of the Indian sub-continent but also Europe, United States of America, Japan, Africa and the new born state Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Maulana was born in later part of sixth decade of nineteenth century in a poor family. Had to struggle for his education, in addition to traditional Madarsa education he also learnt English language.
The book deals in detail with the multidimensional personality of the Maulana Barkatullah which attached many scholars to write about. A glance at the list of these scholars shows how important and epoch making person he was. This list includes: SP Sen, Maulana Muhammad Mian, Naresh Kumar Jain, M. Irfan, Manzar Husain Sarosh, Syed Wajdi Al Husainni, Ali Jawwad Zaidi, Abdul Rehman Siddiqi, Gulum Rasool Mehr, G.C Kair, Adikari, Hussain Ahmed Madni, Ehsanullah Abbasi, Sattia Pal, Imdad Ali Sabri, Moulvi Muhammad Ali Qasoori, Mulana Obaidullah Sindhi, Mahinder Partab, Maulana Abdullah Yausaf Ali, Qazi Abdul Chaffar, Maulana Abdul Majid Daryabadi,Ahad Shahpuri, Abu Salman Shahjahanpuri, Muhammad Mousa Bhutto, Zafar Hasan Abek and Gregry Banduriski.
All of these writers are acknowledged researcher and scholars. Shafqat Rizvi deserves commendation and respect for taking great pains to conduct thorough research and portray Maulana Kifayatullah in his true colours: A religious scholar, prolific writer and poet, in many languages, political activist, journalist, organiser, activist with a burning heart and restless said and the prime minister in provisional (interne) Indian government set up in Kabul. Some of Mualana Barkatullah political writings, translated from Persian into Urdu by Maulana Hasrat Mohani and reproduced in the book are of immense value.
