The government has allocated one billion rupees for the development of the forests in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). Federal Minister for Environment, Hameedullah Jan Afridi on Monday announced this while chairing a high level meeting with a five-member delegation of IUCN.
The Minister said that a strong monitoring system would be evolved for timely execution of the development projects besides ensuring proper utilisation of funds.
Afridi asked the IUCN management to gear up their efforts for addressing the environmental issues in Fata, which in the past were neglected. The minister emphasised the need for evolving a strategy in consultation with the people of the area.
The delegation apprised the minister that IUCN devices strategies in consultation with the stakeholders and advises the government for tackling environmental problems. Talking to Business Recorder, the officials of Ministry of Environment said that last Saturday, the minister had a meeting with NWFP Governor, Owais Ahmed Ghani at Governor's House in Peshawar and discussed environment projects in the province and Fata.
They said that due to bad environmental conditions, people living in Fata are facing problems such as inadequate water supply and sanitation, low crop productivity and livestock yields, a decline in forest cover, decrease in wildlife species and so on.
