The Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (Awam) in collaboration with other organisations and TIE Foundation conducted a consultation meeting on the theme "Women with disability: Challenges and Resolves" held at Caritas office in Faisalabad.
The consultation meeting was joined by fifteen disabled women, teachers, doctors and representatives of civil society organisations. The keynote of the meeting was to discuss the problems being faced by women with disability to live a normal life.
The participants of the meeting said, "Disabled people face discrimination due to their impairs that is why they are reluctant to prove their abilities and capabilities". Disabled people especially women are neglected by the government too; because ratio of special persons is 10 percent in the country, there is only 2 percent quota is allocated for such people. Despite having 2 percent quota, normal people are appointed almost every field of life in place of special people, which is purely equivalent to denying the right of neglected section of the society.
In our country, we have numerous educational and technical institutes, shopping malls, parks, roads, toilets at public places and transport facilities but none of arrangements are taken into consideration at the time of construction of these places, by which special persons can have easy access to such places. Besides, disabled people suffer problems in the lengthy and complex process of registration.
The participants of the consultation meeting demanded from the government that Pakistan should ratify the UN Convention on the rights of the person with disabilities and take practical steps to implement it in the country and introduce legislation to provide facilities to the disabled people.
