Closing stock market indices
Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Monday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares rose to a four-month closing high as buoyant oil and commodity stocks offset weaker financials, while gains on Wall Street lent further support. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares closed 0.96 percent higher at 1,378.29 points, its fourth up day in a row and its highest close since January 16.
The index is up 2 percent so far this month, adding to a 6 percent rise in the index in April. US stocks rose during European stock market trading hours after a key economic forecasting gauge suggested that even though the economy was weak, it has averted recession, easing worries about the profit outlook.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 7,225.94 points, up 69.39 or 0.97 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5,142.1 points, up 64.06 or 1.26 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 7,778.93 points, up 125.22 or 1.64 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 25,917 points, down 359 or 1.37 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares rose 0.31 percent to post their fourth straight session of gains, as strong oil and metals prices lifted resource firms such as Woodside Petroleum Ltd and BHP Billiton Ltd. The S&P/ASX 200 index rose 18.4 points to 5,949.4, a level not seen since February 4 and the highest close since January 15.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: South African stocks surged, led by construction shares, while the rand held near an 11-week high on rising risk appetite and hopes for inflows from a bid for mobile operator MTN. The All-share index closed at 33,191.8 points, up 490.82 or 1.50 percent. The All Gold index closed at 2,511.86 points, up 39.46 or 1.60 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 21,704.64 points, up 244.54 or 1.14 percent.
MUMBAI STOCKS EXCHANGE: Indian stock, bond and currency markets are closed on Monday for a local holiday. Trading resumes on Tuesday.
BANGKOK STOCKS EXCHANGE: Thai stock markets were closed on Monday for a public holiday. Trading will resume on Tuesday.
SINGAPORE STOCKS EXCHANGE: Singapore stock and financial markets are closed on Monday, May 19, for a public holiday. They will reopen on Tuesday.
KUALA LUMPUR STOCKS EXCHANGE: Financial and stock markets in Malaysia are closed on Monday, May 19, for a public holiday. They will reopen on Tuesday.
