Indonesian shares closed 0.7 percent lower on Wednesday, with Wall Street's slump overnight prompting investors to lock in profits after six consecutive trading days of gains, dealers said. The Jakarta Composite Index closed down 16.25 points at 2,494.71, off a low of 2,472.67. Volume was 6.98 billion shares valued at 7.43 trillion rupiah (809 million dollars).
Decliners led gainers 135 to 77, with 60 stocks unchanged.Bumi Resources fell 2.4 percent to 8,250 rupiah while its peer Bukit Asam dropped 0.9 percent to 11,550 rupiah.
Bumi was hit by profit-taking following its strong rally in recent weeks, prompting investors to turn their attention to other coal producers such as Indo Tambangraya. Indo Tambangraya, a unit of Thailand's Banpu Public Co, surged 10.3 percent to 30,500 rupiah.
Nickel and gold miner Antam declined 2 percent to 3,700 rupiah while tin and nickel miner Inco dropped 1.5 percent to 6,700 rupiah. Conglomerate Astra International declined 1.1 percent to 21,750 rupiah and index heavyweight Telkom fell 0.6 percent to 11,550 rupiah. Tin miner Timah gained 2.6 percent to 35,650 rupiah, reversing course after having fallen to 33,800 rupiah.
