The Fisheries Department Punjab has imposed a complete ban on all kinds of net fishing during breeding season across the province from June 01 till August 31.
The Director General (DG), Fisheries, Punjab, Dr Muhammad Ayub told APP on Sunday that the fishermen violating the ban will have to undergo six month imprisonment with a fine of Rs5, 000 each besides seizure of their catch and other paraphernalia.
He said fisheries officials would conduct series of surprise raids on natural water areas across the province during the closure while the department has already launched a crackdown against illegal netting. Further the DG Fisheries said that several raiding teams have been formed at district level to take strict action against those fishing by nets illegally.
Dr Ayub also said, during breeding season, fish of all species lay eggs that need natural environment for maximum growth and rearing. He pointed out that during breeding season, fish produces less protein and loses taste.
Moreover, the district officials have also been instructed to conduct raids in their respective areas, especially in the rivers or lakes, he added.
