The Punjab Commerce and Investment Department, jointly with the Heritage Association will organise a two-day International Phulkari conference on May 27. Punjab government, realising the importance of this heritage has put together the two-day event while Punjab Senior Minister, Raja Riaz Ahmed would inaugurate the moot, said official at the ministry.
Embroidery artisans from different parts of the province will exhibit their pieces during the event. The idea behind the moot is to project and promote the age-old heritage of Punjab, which has been a source of livelihood and joy for many centuries in a row, the official said.
Leading experts' form India and Pakistan will deliberate on different aspects of this historical embroidery of Punjab. The stakeholders not only make a living out of this art but also gain spiritual strength through its making. Phulkari is also mentioned in the history, tradition and folklore of Punjab. Furthermore, embroidery has been revived by the people who have extensively written and projected Phulkari in modern dress designing.
Phulkari has a lot of variations in styles and designs, nurtured by Punjabi household especially the girls who carefully do embroidery, stitch by stitch, selecting unique colour schemes during the course of work. The designs in Phulkari cannot be copied or traced because of its natural conceptualisation by the worker's innovative ideas and concentration. Hopefully, the conference will bring the artisans of two neighbouring countries closure on a traditional platform, he added.
