Under Access to Justice Programme (AJP) over 1,450 modern computers have been procured for their installation in the courts all around the country According to a press release from the AJP "Over 1450 computers have been procured after an international bidding for the automation of judiciary through out Pakistan."
This is for the first time that capacity building of justice sector in the wake of IT challenges is being considered at a large scale. According to this programme a whole range of computers along with other information technology accessories will be provided to justice sector institutions from Karachi to Khyber. According to the plan around 600 computers will be provided to all the courts in Punjab whereas 317 computers will reach the courts in Sindh.
Similarly, the share of NWFP and Balochistan for these digital equipment is 207 and 82 respectively. The provision of these computers to the judiciary in the country is in connection with government's programme to automate and connect all the tiers of courts electronically. This will facilitate the users and stakeholders of justice sector to access online information concerning the courts and cases.
Apart from these computers will also be given to 67 Bar Associations around the country to enable bars to fulfil their mandated responsibilities regarding legal matters. The equipment will also be provided to digitalise major libraries in justice sector departments such as Law Department, Home Departments and offices of the Ombudsman.
The provision of computers and other IT accessories to judiciary at a large scale will help improve efficiency of the courts. Digitalisation of courts as a result of this intervention will also result in free and easy access to information for the common people concerning justice sector.
