The Pakistan Chemists and Druggist Association's (PCDA) R&D Sub Committee Chairman, Dr Mushtaq Noorwala has said that the withdrawal of sales tax exemption on drugs and medicines would result in increase in the cost of medicines by 16 percent.
Commenting on federal budget 2008-09, he said that the withdrawal of sales tax exemption would add to the miseries of poor citizen of Pakistan. Noorwala said flour and rice have been snatched from the mouth of the poor and now they have to bear the burden of sales tax on medicines.
He also demanded withdrawal of 10 percent withholding tax on the utility bills and 35 percent L/C margin to reduce the burden on the manufacturing sector. Noorwala urged the President, Prime Minister, Finance Minister and the members of parliament and senate to intervene in the matter and withdraw imposition of sales tax on medicines.
