The dollar maintained its surge versus the rupee in both open and interbank market on Wednesday, money experts said. In the interbank market the rupee was down by 10 paisa against dollar for buying at 67.80 and it also shed five paisa for selling at 67.85, they said.
They said that many in the market were anticipating that the rupee may recover but against the expectations, the local currency fell due to year-end-payments. In the third session of the Asian trade, dollar steadied against yen and euro after dipping the previous day after US consumer confidence hit a 16-year low and housing prices suffered a record annual drop. The weak data stirred doubts about the US Federal Reserve's ability to raise interest rates later this year to stem inflation, supporting dollar on Tuesday.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee followed same trend, shedding 10 paisa against the dollar for buying and selling at 68.50 and 68.70, they said. The rupee also lost 45 paisa versus the euro for buying and selling at 105.80 and Rs 105.95, dealers said.
