Pakistan's economic survival totally depends on agricultural research and development, which is getting importance with every passing day. The high prices of not only oil, but also the essential food commodities in the entire world have given a significant importance to production of agriculture.
And Pakistan being an agricultural country can totally benefit by increasing its per acre yield, not only in sugarcane, but also entire essential food items.
And that only increase in per acre yield can achieve the country's surplus production, which after fulfilling its domestic requirement can be exported to earn foreign exchange worth billions of dollars, said Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (Punjab Zone) Chairman Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf.
He appealed to the Punjab chief minister to personally intervene in the development of agriculture and specially sugarcane. He said the PSMA leadership had taken its own initiative to form a delegation and visit Australia to invite representatives of the federal and provincial governments of the country to make a breakthrough in sugarcane development in increasing per acre and sugar contents of sugarcane.
He said visit to BSES Australia (Bureau of Sugar Experimentation Stations) was aimed to get their help and form some sort of permanent linkage between Pakistan and Australia as no doubt Australia leads the world in the field of sugar technology and sugarcane research and its by-products.
He said the previous provincial government had formed not only sugarcane, but other agricultural research related organisations on the pattern of Australia by involving agro-based industries, relevant farmers of Punjab and the government's technology experts on the respective boards. It was indeed an innovative idea, which surely could have brought the agricultural revolution in the field of sugar production and economics of the farmers in Punjab.
But during the interim set-up the strong lobbies in bureaucracies tried to bring a halt and derail the efforts as now the entire created set-up has virtually come a point of halt. He appealed to the Punjab chief minister to intervene in the matter and by calling the meeting of these development companies so that the derailed efforts could be brought on the right track.
