Civil society members, political parties, Human rights activists, journalists and lawyers collectively demanded amendments to the Sindh Tenancy Act 1950. They criticised the Sindh government for not forming an amendment committee according to a ruling by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2006.
They further said that there are gaps in the Sindh Tenancy Act 1950, as it is not fulfilling the wishes of Haries of Sindh, they added that the law become inactive when the local government system was introduced in the country.
Addressing a seminar, Kashif Baker (SPARC), Iqbal Detho (SPARC), Zulifqar Shah (PILLER), Adam Malak (ACTIONAID), Barkat Rizvi (EDO revenue HYD), Abid Channa (TRDP), Professor Ajaz Qureshi (CIDA), Zulifqar Halipoto (SDF), Gulam Mustafa Baloch (SPO), Rafique Channa(PILLER), Jam Saqui (HRCP), Punhal Sario (IDO), Zahida Detho (SRSP), Nazar Joyo(ILO/NRSP), Hussain Jar war(PFF), Sami Memon(PFF), Zain Daudpoto(IDO), Advocate Lala Fazal Qadir Memon(bar council), Fiza Shah (GRDO), Ahmed Ali (NADRA), Muna Shah(PFF), Nazeer Qureshi (Sindhyani Tahreek) and others said that the Sindh Tenancy Act is not fitted to the current agricultural situation of country.
The felt that the government should be mentioned in the law as Hari's and Zamindar's responsibilities' are already mentioned in the law. They added that nowadays there is much more market influence and machinery in agriculture so labour input is reducing day by day.
They felt it was important to arrange for social security for haris as factory labourers already have this benefit. Furthermore, they said that separate peasant courts should be established at the Taluka level. They plan on discussing these amendments with Parliamentarians.
