The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has asked all Universities to utilise the high-tech projects being initiated by the Commission for the dissemination of modern knowledge and state of the art techniques to the students and researchers.
The HEC Member, Dr Mukhtar said this while inaugurating the Video Conferencing Hall at the Regional Directorate of HEC, Peshawar on Saturday. The IT application has tremendous utility to build the repertoire of scientific and technological knowledge so that the country could won a respectable place in the 21st century among the comity of nations, he argued.
He said that the IT gives an easy access to the emergence of new technology in a comparatively short time besides facilitating students and researchers to complete their research work in accordance with international standards.
Dr Mukhtar asked both the public and private sector universities to ensure optimum utilisation of Pakistan Education Research Network Project (Pern) so as to expand the base of indigenous research and development programmes.
Dilating upon the upcoming projects, he informed that the HEC was going to implement Electronic books programme, online verification of degrees, Pakistan Research Repository Programme, Digital Library Programme and National Higher Education Job Portal programme in the near future.
Moreover, he added that a proposal for launching information communication technology taskforce for higher education is also in the pipeline. He said that 35 institutions were connected through this video conferencing facility while at the end of the year 60 institutions would be connected.
He urged the Vice Chancellors to raise awareness among their students about the video conferencing facility so that maximum number of students is benefited from it. Earlier, in his welcome address Director Regional Directorate HEC, Farmanullah Anjum while terming the event a milestone in the history of HEC said that the commission has entered into new era of technology. He congratulated the IT engineers for putting in their hard work in materialising the dream and expressed the hope that the facility would further enhance effectiveness of the commission and would facilitate access to the local and foreign universities.
Later, the chief guest distributed shields among the IT staff in recognition of their services. The VC Women University Peshawar, Farhana Jahangir, Dean UET Peshawar, Dr Muhammad Mansoor, Director IMS, Dr Nasir Khan, VC Kohat University, Dr Lutfullah Kakakhel, Dean Faculty of Arts and Humanities UoP, Dr Taj Ali, VC City University Dr Israr Ahmad and Dr Fazal Rahim Marwat of Text Book Board Peshawar were present on the occasion.
