The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed Saturday they have put the eight-week ban of French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt for betting on hold as they examine the affair. As a result, Montcourt, ranked 154th, can play again from Monday, according to French sports daily l'Equipe, as CAS take two to three weeks to decide on whether to uphold the ATP sanction.
An ATP inquiry earlier this month found Montcourt had betted on matches which he had not taken part in between June and November 2005 which was against their rules. He was suspended for eight weeks from August 11 and fined 12,000 dollars (7,980 euro).
The ATP added that their investigation had found no evidence to suggest Montcourt had tried to rig the results. Last month Czech player Frantisek Cermak and Slovak Michal Mertinak (616th) were fined and banned for a similar offense. A recent report into betting in the sport found irregularities in 45 matches played in the last five years, with its authors urging tennis's three ruling bodies (ATP, WTA and ITF) to implement radical change.
