The Sindh Katchi Abadis Authority (SKAA) has launched a low cost housing scheme, Sasti Bastis to facilitate inhabitants of slums and katchi abadis. Official sources in the SKAA told Business Recorder that scheme would cover almost all districts in Sindh including Dadu, Gharo, Sukkar, Larkana, Jacobabad, Karachi, Thatta, Khairpur, Nawabshah, Umerkot, Sanghar and Naushero Feroze.
To a question, sources said that the SKAA would provide over 0.5 million housing units, spread over an area of 80square yards through the scheme. ' The government was taking serious efforts to rehabilitate those, who have been neglected in the past,' they said. Further, the SKAA has established a committee comprising skilled and experienced officers to facilitate the poor people to get benefits from this scheme, officials added.
They also said that authority has extended working hours of lease camps and directed the staff to sit in the camps in the evening so that the routine work of the labour class and workers, who are engaged on daily basis may not suffer. 'A speedy lease recovery campaign was arranged to facilitate the inmates of Katchi Abadis in Sindh,' they maintained.
Officials further said that Katchi Abadis established before March 23, 1985, would only be entertained through the scheme while there were some 1293 Katchi Abadis located across the Sindh.
'The SKAA generates its own funds to meet its organisational expenses instead of getting it from the government. The authority earns the money on the account of charge fee on the lease of lands, they claimed. The amount earned from land leasing is used for the payment of staff salaries and other expenses of the organisation, they added.
