Pollution of different kinds was increasing in Pakistan and there was need of implementing the relevant laws in letter and spirit to make healthy environment in the country. Department of Medicine Professor Dr Muhammad Khalid Shaikh expressed his concern while talking to newsmen here on Wednesday.
He said many diseases were because of human negligence due to smoke and noise pollution, adding that noise, air and waste material induced pollution besides smoke of cigarette was also causing pollution. Dr Shaikh said industrial effluents, improper sewage disposal and uprooting of forest had aggravated the situation and if no attention was paid in this direction, the people might suffer from different kinds of diseases.
He said there was dire need of strict vigilance and effective implementation of environmental rules and regulations so that the hazards of air, noise and water pollution could be addressed and a healthy environment could be provided to the people.
Dr Shaikh emphasised need to launch a massive mass awareness campaign to inform people the causes that made their surroundings polluted, adding that people must know that proper disposal of waste at designated landfill sites and their adequate recycling could help the people to live in polluted free atmosphere. He suggested that residential areas should be kept at a distance from the commercial and industrial areas, while efforts should be made to ensure no traffic noise around hospitals, schools and offices.
