Celebrations which started in the city on Saturday continued on second day (Sunday) in Multan and rest of Southern Punjab on Asif Zardari's victory in presidential election. Jubilant PPP workers gathered in front of the Multan Press Club, at Hussain Agahi, Chowk Dera Adda, and Chowk Ghanta Ghar to express happiness over election of their party chief as country's 12th president.
PPP workers danced to the tune of drum and marched on roads. PPP's Multan president Khurshid Ahmed Khan, general secretary M. Salim Raja, secretary information Tariq Raza Khan and other local leaders were prominent on the occasion. Sweets were also distributed, besides an impressive show of fireworks. PPP workers belonging to different wings, including women, labour and mother wings, came on streets soon after the announcement of the result of the presidential election.
They termed it the result of the sacrifices rendered by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. Some of them were carrying banners inscribed with pro-Zardari slogans. The atmosphere echoed with the slogans of Jeay Bhutto. The PPP also organised a rally at mausoleums of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya, Shah Rukn-i-Alam, Hazrat Shah Shams Tabrez, where party workers and leaders also offered thank-giving prayers. An impressive dance by trained horses, Bhangra (traditional dance performance) by party workers and distribution of sweets and milk were the hallmark of the event.
Syed Ahmed Mujtaba Gilani, younger brother of Prime Minister said that Asif Ali Zardari's election as President was the victory of masses and party workers. He said that people of Pakistan in all the four provinces had expressed their full faith and confidence in the leadership of Zardari, who would steer the country out of the current crises. Members of PPP (Women Wing) Begum Shama Awan, Sehrish Khan, Begum Saeeda Jamal Labar, Begum Bushra Naqvi advocate, Muazzama Hasnain Advocate, Begum Zubaida Khokhar, Begum Maqbool Shaukat also celebrated the success of Asif Ali Zardari in presidential election.
