The Advisory Committee for Minerals Development has finalised recommendations for NWFP Lime Stone Policy 2008-09. The recommendations were finalised in the meeting of the committee held at the provincial office of Small & Medium Enterprise Development Authority (Smeda).
Those who attended the meeting included Mumtaz Khan Khalil, Director General Mines and Mineral (DGMM), Syed Abdullah Bacha President, Frontier Mine Owners Association, Hameed Khattak, (FMOA), Professor Tahir Shah, Director NCE in Geology, Professor Dr K G Jadoon, Chairman, Mining Engineering Department UET Peshawar, Yaqoob Shah, GM Minerals Fata Development Authority, Javed Khattak, Provincial Chief Smeda, Sarmad Hussain, Manager and Ishfaq Afridi, assistant manager Smeda NWFP.
The committee is a forum that has the capacity and expertise to play a pivotal role in mineral development of NWFP & tribal areas. The committee was established by the department of industries, government of NWFP and is the continuation of previous initiatives of Smeda in development of potential sectors that resulted in establishment of Pakistan Stone Development Company (Pasdec), Pakistan Gems & Jewellery Development Company (PGJDC) and Pakistan Dairy Development Company etc.
The meeting emphasised on joint working of private and public sector stakeholders in planning and implementing developmental projects. Professor Dr K G Jadoon, Chairman, Mining Engineering, UET Peshawar informed the participants that research related projects planned by the committee would be proposed to the HEC for funding in addition to other sources.
Syed Abdullah pointed out that mine owners are facing problems regarding issuance of challan books that results in encouragement of illegal mining. The DGMM immediately took notice of the issue and assured that he would streamline the system with the co-ordination of private sector.
