The Parliamentary Leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan will be nominated as the 15th Opposition Leader in the National Assembly within few days.
PML-N had filed an application with Speaker National Assembly on Monday for the nomination of Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan as opposition leader and the Speaker will nominate him as new Opposition Leader in place of Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi. It may be recalled that Hussain Shaheed Suharwardi remained opposition leader in 1995 and after him I.I. Chandrigar as opposition leader from 1957 to 1958 and Noor ul Amin from 1965 to 1969.
After the disintegration of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Khan Abdul Wali Khan, father of ANP President Asfandyar Wali remained opposition leader from 1972 to 1975 and after him Mufti Mehmood; father of Maulana Fazlur Rehman worked as opposition leader from 1975 to 1977.
In 1985 when former President General Zia-ul-Haq conducted elections on non-party basis then Haji Saif Ullah Khan remained opposition leader from 1985 to 1987 and after his appointment as Federal Minister then Syed Fakhar Imam held the post of opposition leader from 1987 to 29th May, 1988.
Former Chief Minister Punjab, Ghulam Haidar Wain remained opposition leader during the first tenure of Benazir Bhutto from 3rd Dec, 1988 to 5th June,1989 and after him Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi remained opposition leader from June 6, 1989 to August 6, 1990.
Former Premier and slain leader Pakistan People's Party has the honour of being opposition leader twice (1990-93 and 1997-99) and also twice Prime Minister of the country. Similarly Chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif remained opposition leader from 1993 to 1996 besides being Prime Minister of Pakistan for two terms.
Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has been working as opposition leader in the National Assembly since 10th April, 2008 and after the application of PML-N for the nomination of Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan as opposition leader, the Speaker will nominate Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in place of Chaudhry Pervez Elahi.
