In a clear sign of the South Asian neighbours trying seriously to overcome their trust deficit, foreign ministers of Afghanistan and Pakistan will meet later this month in New York. Afghan Foreign Minister Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta will hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi on subjects of bilateral importance on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
In an effort to find mutually acceptable solutions to common problems facing Afghanistan and Pakistan, a much-delayed mini-jirga (jirgagai) will also convene soon after the Eidul Fitr in the Pakistani capital, reports Pajhwok Afghan News.
Speaking to reporters at the Foreign Office in Islamabad, Qureshi said Dr Spanta had telephoned him to propose diplomatic re-engagement between the neighbours - struggling to contain militant-linked violence. The telephonic conversation between the ministers came hard on the heels of President Hamid Karzai's fence-mending visit to Islamabad to participate in the oath-taking ceremony of his newly-elected Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari. According to media reports, the Regional Economic Co-operation Conference on Afghanistan (RECCA) would take place in Islamabad. Dates for the event will be firmed up towards the end of November.
