Education is a prerequisite for development and government is paying special attention to the uplift and strengthening of education sector. Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif said.
While addressing a ceremony held for distribution of prizes and certificates among the Vice Chancellors, Principals, Headmasters and Headmistresses of educational institutions from where students achieved top positions in examinations.
The Chief Minister said provision of health and educational facilities as well as protection of life and property of citizens is the prime responsibility of any government. Shahbaz added that he as Chief Servant of the masses will discharge his obligations in this regard.
He said history will not forgive us if we did not pay attention to the uplift of education. The CM said that an endowment fund has been set up with a sum of one billion rupees for the first time in the history of the province and the government will bear all educational expenditures of the talented but poor students who wish to acquire higher education.
He said teaching is a noble profession and those who are associated with this sector are rendering invaluable services to the society. Provincial Ministers, Mian Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman, Ahmad Ali Olak, Malik Nadeem Kamran and Secretaries of Higher education and schools were also present on the occasion.
Shahbaz said Pakistan was achieved after numerous sacrifices so that people of this country could have all basic facilities. He said today's Pakistan is not what was envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam and other leaders of Pakistan movement.
He said that Pakistan today is standing at a cross roads and we have to decide how ignorance can be removed. The CM said that little attention was paid to the strengthening of education sector in the last 60 years due to which the condition of public schools is pathetic and class based education system has become a menace.
He said collective efforts are needed for promotion of education sector, enrolment of maximum number of students and ensuring attendance of teachers. The Chief Minister further said that present government is implementing a comprehensive strategy for the promotion of quality education.
He said educational seminars and conferences will be arranged in major cities of Punjab after Ramzan ul Mubarak for soliciting proposals and a comprehensive education policy would be evolved.
Shahbaz said the provincial government has set a new tradition by presenting guard of honour to students who obtained top positions in examinations and this step will further encourage them. Similarly, he said that a function has been arranged at Chief Minister's Secretariat for acknowledging the services of outstanding teachers.
The Chief Minister also sought proposals from teachers for the uplift of educational system. The teachers appreciated the commitment and dedication of Punjab Chief Minister for the development of education sector and assure their full support for this cause. Earlier, the Chief Minister gave away cheques of Rs 100,000 each and certificates to the heads of educational institutions.
