Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Mushahid Hussain Sayed has said that President Asif Ali Zardari must have highlighted Kashmir issue in his address to the 63rd UN general assembly session, as it is core issue between Pakistan and India. The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Relations met here with Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed in the chair.
The committee was unanimous on the issue to obstruct any Indian move for permanent membership of UN Security Council. The committee said that the government must present the draft of foreign policy to the committee and bar any move by India at all levels for permanent slot in the UN Security Council.
The members said that expansion of United Nations should be done in a positive manner without hurting the feelings of other member states. It also showed reservations on Indo-US nuclear deal and Afghanistan proposal for formation of joint force of Pakistan, Afghanistan and US to monitor the border areas.
Talking to Business Recorder, Dr Shireen M. Mazari, former director Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad (ISSI), who was also present in the meeting opined that we need a clear cut strategy vis-à-vis United Nations reforms. Giving veto power to more members of the UN Security Council would undermine the principled UN reform agenda. She said that our permanent representative should have arranged UN working groups' meetings to highlight Pakistan's viewpoint across the globe.
