City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has appreciated the role and assistance of the private sector in the improvement of health care facilities at government-run hospitals in Karachi.
He was addressing a ceremony at Civic Centre here on Tuesday in which the management of Habib Bank Limited (HBL) gave away cheques of Rs 18 million to directors and medical superintendents of three major hospitals of Karachi for improvement of existing health care facilities.
Renowned neuro surgeon, Dr Rasheed Jumma and Chairman of Habib Bank, Sultan Allana also addressed the ceremony. Earlier, HBL Chairman handed over a cheque of rupees eight million to Deputy Director Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi and cheques of rupees five million each to Director and Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, the City Nazim thanked the HBL management as well as renowned Dr Jumma for their cooperation and support to city hospitals, saying their gesture, not the money was a healthy tradition and sign. He maintained that by donating the money, HBL has set up a trend for other corporate sector organisations and expressed the hope that they would also come forward and fulfil their corporate social responsibilities.
HBL Chairman said their organisation has always supported the suffering humanity whenever there is a need whether it is floods, earthquake or any other natural calamity in the country and they feel that it is their corporate social responsibility to assist public sector hospitals in the city.
Dr Jumma said the HBL management had expressed the wish to work with major local hospitals and he was entrusted with the task of assessing their needs and suggesting what could be done for them.
He said rupees eight million donated by the HBL for JPMC would be used for improvement of its Casualty Ward, while rupees five million for Civil Hospital would be spent on renovation of Gynecology Ward and the amount of rupees five million would be used for provision of air compressors for ventilators in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
