The grand Jirga of tribesmen mulling over to restore peace in the restive Kurram Agency on Monday reached a peace agreement and asked the agency's political administration to send contingents of the Frontier Corps (FC) to the area to implement the cease-fire agreement signed earlier by elders of the two groups.
The political administration has been asked by the Jirga that the warring Shia and Sunni sects have been told that a fine of Rs 20 million would be imposed if the agreement was violated. A MNA from Fata said the jirga members have asked the political agent Kurram to explain its position whether he has the authority to deploy the forces in case the rival groups left the hideouts vacant.
The member said that the Jirga held at Hangu earlier when requested the political administration to send troops to the hideouts and take action against those who did not abide by the accord, the political administration could not send the FC due to hesitation by the concerned military officials.
This time, the member said, the Jirga members are committed to bring permanent peace in the troubled areas and expressed their wish to meet Prime Minister, NWFP governor, advisor on interior and other high authorities in order to bring durable peace.
Khursheed Anwar Jawadi, a member of the 'mediation committee' said both the tribes have agreed on a cease-fire agreement and the political administration has also decided to send the troops.
He said that the Jirga members of the two rival tribes have shown complete confidence over the mediation committee. He said the Jirga members apprised the committee about their concern that needs early action to be acted upon. The issues like exchange of kidnappers, opening of Thall-Parachinar road and protection to the lives and properties of the travellers and rehabilitation of the displaced families were discussed in detail.
Gul Ahmed, representing Mangal tribe in the Jirga said that they have agreed over all terms to implement peace accord in the area. He said that they suggested to the political administration to take action against those who are still holding guns against each other. The Jirga members and the mediation committee would meet again on Tuesday to sort out ways to restore peace and open the only road that links Parachinar with the rest of the country, which has been blocked for last several months.
