President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Aitzaz Ahsan has said that Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) is interfering in the SCBA election and we are ignoring only to allow the election process to complete.
While addressing a press conference here after SCBA annual general meeting, Aitzaz said PBC has no authority to interfere in SCBA election but it changed the returning officers and voters and allowing ineligible persons to contest elections.
He said these steps taken by PBC amount to rig the bar election and we reserve our right against such actions. He said people in lawyers' movement could only play their role for the betterment of the judiciary and to support the judges to give bold decisions. He therefore, asked the lawyers to cast their vote for the people who struggle for rule of law, independence of judiciary and reinstatement of the deposed judges.
He said although government did not reinstate all the deposed judges but time and again announcement and agreement for reinstatement of judges by the political leadership was under the pressure of the lawyers' movement. He however said that lawyers' movement will continue till the reinstatement of all deposed judges.
He said after his tenure, even being member of Pakistan People's Party he will remain with lawyers in their struggle for the reinstatement of judges. On a question, he replied that bar has decided to issue notice to former bar president Malik Qayyum for returning bar funds otherwise legal proceedings would be initiated against him. He said these funds were given for the welfare of the bar members and these could not be converted to any trust.
He said Malik Qayyum had sentenced Asif Ali Zardari and Ms Benazir Bhutto but now their party is seeking support for their favourite candidate. To another question he said that he is member of PPP and will remain with it but in lawyers movement he is with his fraternity. Earlier, bar annual general meeting passed the annual budget. However PPP affiliated bar members boycotted the meeting and termed it a meeting of a group.
