The legal fraternity on Tuesday elected firebrand Ali Ahmed Kurd as president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), the heart and soul of lawyers' movement from across the country by overwhelming majority in a pursuit to revive their movement once again.
The polling station at Supreme Court building was conquered by Ali Ahmed Kurd, who won with a margin of 74 votes securing 144 against his rival Muhammad Zafar who got 70 votes. Out of 230 registered votes, 215 lawyers used their right and one vote was rejected. According to the unofficial results of eight polling stations across the country, Kurd, the former Vice President of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) along with his penal has won the 2008-09 election of the SCBA. The official announcement for the election would be made on October 31.
Known for his aggressive speeches and outspoken attitude towards the military regime of General Pervaiz Musharraf supporters of Kurd believe that after being elected as president of the association will give the lawyers' movement a fresh impetus. He was pitched against Mohammad Zafar who happens to be a teacher of Kurd. M Zafar is a known and respected jurist, honorary teacher of the Quetta Law College, a practising lawyer and had been president of the Balochistan Bar Association in the 1980s.
Eight polling stations were set up in the country with each in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Bhawalpur and Abbottabad. The polling in Islamabad started at 8.30 am and lasted till 4.30 pm.
The polling at SC was peaceful till noon but the angry lawyers infuriated when a PPP parliamentarian Mahreen Anwer Raja, member of the association tried to enter the building without having her membership card. President of Rawalpindi Bar Association, Islamabad Bar Association and other office-bearers and other leaders of lawyers' movement were present to monitor the election.
