Students of class XI are facing severe hardships in changing their colleges due to long distances and studies problems in different colleges of the city. The parents and students, standing outside the office of Director-General, Colleges (DGC), Sindh, told Business Recorder that they were coming on regular basis to discuss the issue with the director but they could not meet him because every time when they arrived at his office they found him absent.
They said that they have filed application forms, which are required for change in college, but all in vain. They said that when they reached the DGC office early in the morning, they were told that their forms were rejected.
The students said that they had applied for admission in 2008-09 in different colleges of the city which were near their residence but the board had given them admissions in colleges that are far away from their residence. They alleged that students belonging to various organisations and having political cover are considered on priority basis and the management of Director General Colleges Sindh is neglecting common man, telling them that the objection was irrelevant.
Parents of the students also alleged that the admissions, which were given to the students under Centralised Admission Policy (CAP) 2008-09, were causing many difficulties for their children due to unclear terms and conditions, which were mentioned in the booklet attached with admission forms.
The father of a student of Khatoon-e-Pakistan College said that he was coming to the office of director colleges to meet the director but he could not meet him due to continuous absence of respectable director in his office. He said that his daughter had applied for colleges which are near her home but the board granted her admission in a college which is far away from her home, even though she met the criteria required for admission in those colleges.
He said that she changes three buses regularly to reach her college, and he could not afford the expensive studies due to rapid increase in inflation and skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. If the authorities concerned would not take steps to facilitate students then it becomes impossible for poor students to carry on studies, he said.
Another student of National College Karachi, resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, claimed that he had also applied for the colleges situated in Gulshan-e-Iqbal but he could not get admission in desired colleges even though he met the criteria required for admission.
Some other girls standing outside the office said that they were also facing problems for change in college. They said that the Secretary of Director Colleges Sindh asked them to bring application along with the permission of Principal.
She said that when she came along with the application and permission of the Principal of college, she was told that the director colleges left from his office and asked her to come on Tuesday. They said that the admission in different government colleges were given according to the criteria which was fixed in Centralised Admission Policy (CAP) purely on merit basis but it should also discussed that the admission would be given to colleges near to the residence of students so as to provide them with maximum relief.
They said that the students were already facing severe problems due to delay in announcement of admission and commencement of academic year. The parents and students belonging to different colleges of Karachi said that the annual examination is on head but delay in completion of admission process creates more troubles for them.
They urged that the policy makers should analyse the needs of students while making policies to provide maximum relief to the students so that they could perform well during examination. They demanded of the authorities concerned to look into the matter and save the students from destruction.
