Pakistan Labour Party (PLP) central spokesman Farooq Tariq, Kamalia Sugar Mills Ittefaq Workers Union president Rana Iftikhar and district PLP secretary Tariq Mahmood have claimed that the new management of the mills has not paid arrears of Rs 70 million to its 1,200 workers who were retrenched after the mills' privatisation in 1998.
Addressing a press conference in Toba Tek Singh Press Club they said that no government could take action against the management due to political pressure of former senator Farooq Ahmad Khan, who is owner of the mill. They demanded of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to put pressure on the mill's owner to pay all the outstanding dues to the workers, besides reinstating all the employees who were terminated without any solid reasons. They announced that if their demands were not met they will be forced to protest along with their terminated colleagues on the roads.
