The Regional Tax Office (RTO) Lahore has received 267,806 returns under the Universal Self-Assessment Scheme (USAS) for the tax year 2008 till October 31, 2008 and revenue of Rs 283 million as tax with the returns of income.
According to RTO a spokesman, the numbers of filed returns have increased from 251,016 for tax year 2007 to 267,806 for the tax year 2008. The amount of tax paid with the returns filed for tax year 2008 has also increased from Rs 274 million to Rs 283 million, as compared to the preceding year.
It reflects the trust reposed by the taxpayers in tax collectors and reform process. Under the Investment Tax Scheme-2008 (ITS-2008), the RTO Lahore received 871 declarations and a tax of Rs 162 million. The spokesman claimed that the ITS-2008 showed large-scale acceptance amongst existing and new taxpayers. The Director General, RTO, Lahore, Khawaja Shaukat Ali also held seminars and a number of meetings with the office bearers of the trade bodies and tax bars to highlight its importance.
The spokesman further stated that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Islamabad made e-filing of returns and statements mandatory since tax year 2007 for corporate sectors. Since the introduction of e filing and facility of e-Portal for the taxpayers, 4, 718 corporate returns have been received through e-filing. Further, E-filing of monthly and annual withholding statements have also been mandatory for the corporate taxpayers. E-portal also showed continuous increase in the number of enrolments and filing of withholding statements.
Moreover, non corporate sector and the government departments acting as withholding agents are also being encouraged to avail the facility of e-filing. The field of formation co-ordinated with the AG office to ensure e-filing of monthly and annual withholding statements. The AG office has also started e-filing these statements, as a result of efforts made by of CIT, Enforcement and Collection Division-III, RTO, Lahore, the spokesman concluded.
