The Department of Agriculture, NWFP will start work on evolving a mechanism for proper utilisation of the share of agriculture research in sugarcane cess on various uplift schemes for the welfare of farmers. The meeting was chaired by NWFP Minister for Agriculture Arbab Muhammad Ayub Jan and attended by Secretary Agriculture Attaullah Khan, DG Research Abdul Rahim Khan and other concerned officials of the department.
The meeting was told that Rs 2.2 million have been received at the rate of 15 percent of the total amount of the sugarcane cess, which would be spent on various developmental projects for the welfare of farmers. The meeting was further informed that the available 29 acres land in Harichand and Rata Kulachi would be utilised for carrying out research work on new varieties of sugarcane.
While 21 sugarcane demonstration plots would be developed in private sector for the purpose of development of sugarcane seed and the owners of the plots would be bound to return all the sugarcane to the Agriculture Department for producing seed. The meeting was also informed that 30,000 cards of Tricho Groma would be prepared in the laboratory for eradicating borers - an insect causing disease in sugarcane - that would save 8,000 acres of land cane crop from borers.
