Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is determined to strengthen the parliamentary form of government in the country and the PML-N under the leadership of Mian Nawaz Sharif is striving for ensuring strong and sovereign parliament.
Sources in the PML-N told Business Recorder, here on Sunday that the PML-N is of the firm view that only a 'sovereign parliament' can help steer the country out of existing crisis. A strong parliament is also needed to raise the image of the country in the comity of nations, the sources claimed.
Referring to meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N sources claimed that it was 'fruitful' and we are expecting some positive outcome vis-à-vis abrogation of 17th constitutional amendment which is necessary for parliamentary form of government.
However, the PML-N Secretary General International Affairs Sheikh Kaiser Mehmood said that the PPP has disappointed masses by not honouring promises including pertaining independence of judiciary. "Had the PPP not indulged in foul play to come to power, national institutions of judiciary and parliament would not have been weakened", he opined.
Underling the need for strengthening parliamentary form of government, he said it was essential for promotion of democracy and President would have to give his some powers to elected parliament. He said only those countries of the world have achieved the goal of progress and prosperity where institutions are strong.
Sheikh Kaiser Mehmood said only strong and sovereign parliament can help steer the country out of crisis by ensuring peace and stability. He said if PPP government takes steps as per Charter of Democracy (CoD) and Murree Declaration, all problems facing the country would be resolved. "PPP would lose credibility, if it failed to restore 1973 constitution to its October 12, 1999 position", he said.
He maintained that after objectives resolution, 1973 Constitution is guarantee of integrity and solidarity of the country. Terming the 17th amendment and Article 58-2B as blemish on democracy, he said all remnants of Pervez Musharraf will have to be done away to ensure that fruits of democracy reach to the people.
Another PML-N leader Sajjad Hussain Chheena has said that it is time to work with unity to steer the country out of present crisis. He said Mian Shahbaz Sharif through good and clean administration has purged the province of corruption and politics of personal vendetta.
